Reflection on My Service-Learning Experience
My time in this criminal justice course and with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department has been invaluable. This internship gave me a strong understanding of the basics of criminal justice, law enforcement ethics, and crime studies. However, it was the service-learning experience with the Sheriff's Department that truly allowed me to connect those theories to real-world applications in this agency. It was an eye-opening experience, filled with meaningful insights and knowledge that will stay with me.
The Value of Service-Learning
Service-learning is critical for bridging theory with practice. It allowed me to witness the day-to-day operations of sheriff deputies, from corrections, booking, and classification to court security, victim-witness services, and criminal apprehension. I saw how cultural awareness, empathy, and professionalism are essential in this line of work, particularly when interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This real-world exposure deepened my understanding of the complexities in the criminal justice field.
Preparing for My Next Steps
This experience has prepared me by developing my practical skills, such as critical thinking, effective communication, and professionalism. Working alongside deputies, I gained confidence in understanding the in's and out's of the correctional aspect in Criminal Justice works. I also developed relationships with professionals in the field, which will be helpful as I move forward in my career.
Conclusion
Service-learning helped me see that law enforcement is not just about enforcing laws but understanding people and situations. It gave me hands-on experience and valuable insights that will guide my future career in criminal justice. Whether I pursue corrections or not, I feel better prepared to contribute meaningfully to the field as a whole.
