Field Notes

During my service-learning experience at the Chesapeake City Jail, I gained valuable insights into many different areas within the agency. I began with an orientation covering essential policies like the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and health precautions. In booking, I observed how individuals are processed, fingerprinted, and assigned bonds. I found the "weekender program" particularly interesting, where inmates serve sentences on weekends and participate in community service.Throughout my time, I learned about various bond types and detainers for individuals facing charges in multiple jurisdictions. In the classification unit, I saw how inmates are assessed for security levels and assigned housing. I also observed rehabilitation programs like reentry classes. At the courthouse, I observed court security, the steps of inmate transport, and the role of Victim Witness Assistance, particularly in domestic violence and juvenile cases. In the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, I witnessed arrests and the collaboration between police and deputies. In corrections, I observed various housing units, including high-security pods and medical housing. One of the most impactful experiences was observing the medical housing unit, where I saw firsthand the challenges of dealing with inmates who are suicidal or detoxing. I also learned how the jail ensures safety and security through strict protocols for male and female inmates. In Master Control, I observed the coordination of inmate movement and the role of the ERT team. This experience deepened my understanding of the correctional system and strengthened my interest in law enforcement.

** Below I have attached a PDF that includes field notes for each hour I completed through out my time at the Chesapeake's Sheriffs Office. This will give you a more in depth look into the daily work of sheriff deputies.
